Attractions & Sightseeing
Javanese delights, ancient monuments and age-old traditions abound in Yogyakarta, capital of central Java and the cradle of Javanese civilisation.

A good place to experience these is Kraton, the Sultan's Palace. Built in the 1700s, this Javanese-style complex of buildings, squares and pavilions remains the centre of culture and practising arts as many students from all over the island travel here to learn Javanese dances and puppetry.

The Palace also houses the ruler's family as well as sacred heirlooms collected and kept over the years. A must-see is the Golden Pavilion, a magnificent reception hall used only for state functions and family ceremonies.

Then go on an hour's drive into the outskirts to visit the famous Borobudur temple, the crowning glory of Yogyakarta. It is one of the world's greatest Buddhist temples and was built in 800 AD. Located on a hill top, it is made up of 72 bell-shaped shrines or stupas on a series of stone terraces, with each stupa enclosing a statue of Buddha.
